Warning When Installing SQL 2005 for SCCM 2007 on a Windows 2003 64 bit

When you try to install SCCM 2007 on a 64 bit Windows using the “Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 with SQL 2005 Technology” DVDs that should come in a set of 4 DVDs, you will realise soon enough during the installation of SQL Server’s prerequisite check that there is a warning showing that ASP .NET is in a 64 bit version. This causes the option for SQL Reporting Services to be dimed out disallowing you to install that component. This is really because the IIS component that is installed is a 64 bit version and the SQL provided in that SKU is in 32 bit. Problem? Not really…

Here’s a simple workaround. It is really is about the issue with the prerequisite checker. All you need to do is enable 32 bit support on the 64 bit IIS. Open the command prompt and then run the following command.

cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%inetpubadminscriptsadsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

Close and rerun the SQL installation again and you should have the prerequisite item passed. 🙂 You may have to flip it back and forth in the course of the installation e.g. whilst installing WSUS x64. As such, you just have to flip from 1 to 0 or vice versa.
